2011年國際標準化組織(ISO) 發行 ISO 13053：《過程改進定量方法 - 六標準差》，為描述營運改進方法之一的「六標準差」國際標準。ISO 13053包括兩部分，第1部分為DMAIC方法，第2部分為工具與技法：

六標準差方法一般包括定義(define)、量測(measure)、分析(analyse)、改進(improve)、及控制(control)五個階段，稱為DMAIC。
